About 30 minutes west of Bloomington is Mackinaw, and just outside town is one of my favorite lake neighborhoods in the area: Heritage Lake. Some of the best properties in Tazewell County are here, within easy reach of both Peoria and Bloomington-Normal. Heritage Lake is in Deer Creek-Mackinaw CUSD 701, with schools in Mackinaw and Deer Creek and Dee-Mack High School in Mackinaw.

Heritage Lake is about a mile outside Mackinaw and is both a residential community and a recreation area. It's known for its natural beauty. Picture a morning walk along the lake at sunrise, or coffee on your deck with plenty of privacy, which is hard to find in town. There are homes for just about every buyer, from simple lake cottages that are a real value to large lakefront homes with five or more bedrooms. Many have custom kitchens, big wraparound decks, outdoor entertaining areas and extra outbuildings.

The Heritage Lake Association is very active, with meetings, garage sales, volunteer days and clubs for members, and an active association makes a big difference in how a community feels.
