Danvers is the small town on the west side of Bloomington-Normal, about eleven miles out Route 9 from downtown Bloomington, which works out to a twenty-minute drive to State Farm, the hospitals, or Illinois State. About 1,100 people live here. It is the kind of place that still has a grain elevator, a bank, a couple of taverns, and a community band that plays Sunday evenings in the park all summer. If you work on the west side of town, or you just want more house and more yard for the money, Danvers belongs on your list.
The town was laid out in 1836 as Concord, renamed Danvers in 1861, and for almost fifty years an electric interurban ran from here into Bloomington. The original town-square block has been Danvers Park from the beginning, and it is the center of everything: the summer concerts and farmers market, the Christmas tree lighting in December, and Danvers Days, the big community weekend in August with the parade, vendor fair, and fireworks. The Village of Danvers site has the calendar; Village Hall is at 105 S. Broadway, (309) 963-4928.
Schools. Danvers is in Olympia CUSD 16, one of the largest rural districts in Illinois by area. Olympia North Elementary is right in Danvers, on the east side of the village, and Olympia Middle School and Olympia High School share a campus near Stanford, about a ten-minute bus ride south. Olympia is a solid, well-run district with the small-school feel a lot of families are after, and the Spartans travel well on Friday nights.
Homes. Danvers is mostly single-family homes on a classic village grid, a lot of them from the 1940s through the 1970s, with some older farmhouses in town and newer homes and acreages on the county roads around it. Prices are a real step down from Bloomington for the same square footage. Looking at the closed sales on this site, Danvers homes have mostly traded between the $100s and the low $300s, with rural properties on acreage going higher. As I write this in late October 2026, there are two homes on the market in the village, which is typical; good houses here sell to people who were already waiting for them, so set up an alert on this page.
Two things I check on every Danvers property: whether it is on village water and sewer or well and septic (both exist within a mile of town), and the age of the roof and mechanicals on the older homes, which are usually the only things that need work.
If you want a straight answer on Danvers, call or text me, Bryan Dillow, at 309-531-8309. I have sold homes in the Olympia district for years and I can tell you how it compares to Mackinaw, ten miles further west, and to Carlock, just up the road.
